The New Egyptian Museum: A Monumental Leap into History at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza 2027
Explore the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza, Tutankhamun’s legacy and official visit information.
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo’s Tahrir Square has long introduced visitors to Egyptian antiquities. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near the Giza Plateau creates a larger setting for collections, conservation and the history of ancient Egypt. Exhibitions and access arrangements can change. Check official museum information before visiting.
01.Architecture and the setting beside the pyramids
The museum’s design relates visually to the nearby Giza Plateau, with monumental halls, a grand staircase and extensive galleries. Large exhibition spaces allow major objects to be displayed within a carefully managed museum environment. Visitors can explore Egyptian history while seeing how preservation and interpretation shape the experience.
Why Giza was chosen for a new museum campus
Cairo’s historic Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square holds an immense archaeological legacy, but a purpose-built complex near the Giza pyramids provides more room for large objects, conservation and visitor circulation. The Grand Egyptian Museum brings monumental stone sculpture, galleries and research facilities into one setting, while the Tahrir museum and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization remain distinct institutions with their own collections and roles.
02.Tutankhamun and the objects of KV62
The Tutankhamun collection connects the museum to Howard Carter’s discovery of the tomb in November 1922 in the Valley of the Kings. The antechamber, burial chamber, treasury and annex yielded thousands of objects that transformed public interest in ancient Egypt. Displays should be understood as archaeological evidence, not proof of legends surrounding a supposed curse.

Why the Tutankhamun objects matter
The story begins at KV62 in the Valley of the Kings. The burial chamber contained nested shrines around the sarcophagus, while the other rooms held chariots, beds, furniture, jewellery, ritual figures, vessels and everyday items. Their survival in one tomb created an unusually detailed view of New Kingdom royal funerary practice and craftsmanship.

03.The royal family behind Tutankhamun
The story also includes the late Eighteenth Dynasty: Akhenaten, Queen Tiye, Amenhotep III, Ankhesenamun and Tutankhamun’s short reign. Evidence from inscriptions, archaeology and genetic studies has contributed to the family reconstruction, but some identifications and relationship details remain debated. The story is strongest when these uncertainties are acknowledged rather than treated as settled.
04.The discovery of KV62 in 1922
On 4 November 1922, Howard Carter and his team uncovered the first steps to the sealed entrance of Tutankhamun’s tomb, with the financial support of Lord Carnarvon. Inside were decorated rooms and an extraordinary concentration of burial furnishings. The excavation can be followed from the antechamber to the burial chamber, treasury and annex, a story central to the museum’s Tutankhamun exhibits.
From the first stair to the conservation laboratory
On 4 November 1922, Carter’s team uncovered the beginning of a stairway leading to the tomb. Excavation continued through sealed entrances and densely packed rooms under the patronage of Lord Carnarvon. Recording, photography, conservation and removal of the objects required years of careful work rather than a single dramatic day. Much of the excavation remains important to museum conservation today.

05.Inside the tomb: four linked spaces
The antechamber held beds, chariots and large objects; the burial chamber contained the nested funerary shrines and the sarcophagus. The treasury housed ritual and funerary pieces, while the annex was crowded with equipment and provisions. These finds teach us about Egyptian belief, craftsmanship and royal funerary practice, not just gold and celebrity.

06.Why the tomb survived and what came next
KV62 escaped the scale of robbery that devastated many royal tombs, although ancient disturbance did occur. Carter and his team spent years recording, conserving and removing the objects. Popular stories of a so-called curse expanded after the discovery, but they are not archaeological evidence. The excavation transformed both Egyptology and the public understanding of Tutankhamun.
07.The Amarna family and the late Eighteenth Dynasty
The history includes Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye, their descendants, the reign of Akhenaten, and the family of Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamun. Research has reconstructed much of the dynasty through inscriptions, images and genetic work, but certain identifications remain disputed. The king’s two stillborn daughters found with him add a poignant dimension to the family history.
A family tree with important uncertainties
Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye belonged to the royal family preceding Akhenaten’s religious reforms. Tutankhamun’s parentage has been studied through inscriptions, burials and genetic analysis, but interpretations of certain individuals — including the woman found in tomb KV35 — remain disputed. The young king married Ankhesenamun; two small foetuses discovered in KV62 are commonly associated with the couple. Royal identities and family relationships should be described with that uncertainty in mind.

08.Conservation and the future of Egypt’s treasures
The GEM brings conservation work closer to public interpretation. Ancient wooden furnishings, gilded objects, stone sculpture and fragile materials require different treatments and controlled environments. Museum collections tell a connected story about excavation, care and interpretation, rather than merely presenting artefacts as isolated showpieces.
09.Visit planning and tickets
The official Grand Egyptian Museum ticketing site now lists access to the Tutankhamun Galleries, Main Galleries, Grand Hall, Grand Stairs and Khufu’s Boats Museum, subject to ticket type and visitor rules. Check tickets.gem.eg for current pricing and gem.eg for visiting hours; figures or forecasts quoted in older articles can become inaccurate.
